Getting to Know the Active Chapter
An interactive way to meet our active
members
by Kevin Haslam ‘10
We’ve been working hard to inform our alumni brothers
about what the actives do for the house. However, we haven’t
highlighted some of the things the brothers do outside of
the house to make a difference on campus – whether it be
varsity athletics, involvement in religious groups or even ROTC – our
brothers bring many attributes with them to Phi Delta Theta.
So, without further ado, we’d
like to reintroduce you to the active chapter with information
about what we do both in and out of the house!

| Colby Wesner ‘08 |
Semester: 8
Major: Pre-Med
Hometown: Mifflinburg, PA
Position: THON Chairman
Outside Activities: In 2006, Colby
served as a homecoming OPP captain. This job pretty
much entailed helping to set up and tear down for all
of the events throughout the week of homecoming. Wesner
was also responsible for helping to fill each fraternity’s
and sorority's pomp orders that they needed to use
in order to build their floats and mad hatters. However,
the main task was setting up and tearing down the homecoming
parade and pep rally on the Old Main lawn, Friday before
the football game.
“I had to be up at 7 AM to start roping off the
streets and getting tables and barricades in place, and then I was responsible
for cleaning up all of the parade trash,” Wesner says.
Colby served as a 2007 THON Public Relations Broadcast
captain, as well. The biggest task for this position was to spread the word
about THON to people outside of the Penn State community. Throughout the
year, Colby would contact local, regional and national media to try to get THON
air time. Duties within Public Relations also included organizing the THON
store merchandise, which is one of the biggest ways THON raises money for the
annual total, and also, assisting other committees whenever possible.
Finally, Colby now has the opportunity, this year,
to be a part of the IFC/Panhellenic Review Board. In taking this position, Wesner
would take part in reviewing a few fraternities and sororities, judging how active
they have been throughout the past year.
“I will sit on a board with a few other Greek
members and determine whether or not certain chapters are in good standing, with
both their national headquarters and the Penn State community,” Wesner
explains.
Colby received this position through nomination by the
Penn State Greek advisor, Kevin Kerr. |

Semester: 8
Major: Economics
Hometown: Point Breeze, PA |

|
|
| Mayur Aras ‘08 |
Semester: 6
Major: Education (Math)
Hometown: Reading, PA
Outside Activities: Since the Spring
semester of 2005, Mayur have served as a Learning Skills
Consultant at the Penn State University Learning Center.
The University Learning Center (ULC), located in the
East Halls Commons, is open daily for free tutoring
opportunities to students in need. In particular, the
ULC provides free tutoring in math, English, learning
skills, languages, technology, and various other subjects
from chemistry to economics.
“My job involves helping students with learning
skills, including time management, note taking, test taking, test anxiety, and
test preparation. I mostly see freshman students who didn't really have to study
in high school, and realize that the workload in college is much more demanding,” Aras
explains.
Mayur is also a member of the Schreyer Honors College
since being enrolled at Penn State in the Fall of 2004. The Schreyer Honors College
requires a rigorous application process, and has some benefits to students at
PSU. To begin with, to stay enrolled in the honors college, a student must maintain
at least a 3.3 GPA, regardless of the choice of major. This in itself testifies
to the academic caliber of students in the honors college. Moreover, the members
of the honors college are allowed to schedule classes before any students on
campus, even the Penn State athletes of any sport. In addition, the honors college
has special housing options, located in Simmons and Atherton Halls (South Halls),
which are renowned on campus for their dining hall, the great location, and the
24 hour computer labs and study halls. However, the Schreyer Honors College perhaps
pays its largest benefits after graduation. Many prestigious companies recruit
students directly from the Schreyer Honors College, before consulting the 40,000
student body of Penn State. Employers such as Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Merrill
Lynch, The Boston Group, PNC Bank, Wells and Fargo, HSBC Bank, and others make
regular recruiting trips to Penn State and entertain honors students with formal
dinners, information sessions, and mock interview tips. |

|
| Robby Wu ‘08 |
Semester: 6
Major: Medicine, Psychology
Hometown: Reading, PA
Position: Philanthropic Affairs
Outside Activities: Robby is a member
of Habitat for Humanity. In 2005-2006, he earned a
position on the executive board and worked as the House
Sponsorship Director. One of the duties was to act
as the liaison between Penn State Habitat and the family
that would eventually move into the house that the
club built. He also worked closely with the Fundraising
Director to create fundraisers and secure grants for
the next house. This year, Robby stepped down from
the position in order to pursue other interests (EMS).
Robby is also an EMT for the University Ambulance Service,
as well as a Centre LifeLink EMS. Together, these services cover 9-11 emergency
calls over the entire university and throughout all of Centre County. Robby is
currently working with the University's EMT course, Kinesiology 403. Wu works
as the department's course administrator - grading papers, adjusting grades and
scheduling continuing education. As a teaching assistant for the course, Wu demonstrates
and evaluates skills during the class's weekly labs. He is a certified EMT instructor
and also, a CPR instructor.
Academically, Robby is involved in Dr. Frank Hillary's
neuroscience lab. The lab group studies the effects of traumatic brain injury
through fMRI and CT scanning. Since Penn State doesn't own an fMRI, scans and
studies are done at Hershey Medical Center and the data is processed in Moore
building, on campus. Patients are sometimes given tasks while in the MRI so the
staff can see how their brains are working (memory tasks etc). Wu's role in the
lab is to process the data received by the fMRI readings - which he describes
as "a long tedious task that takes several hours." As a group , the
lab then analyzes the areas of brain activation and considers the implications
of such activity, ttrying to determine how the brain is compensating for the injury. |

and Greek Week captain
“Greek Week
is the one week out of the year that is just for Greeks;
where we get to be Greek, just for the hell of it.
It’s an honor, a tradition and something I am
extremely psyched to be a part of.”
Josh has recently been elected as a 2007 Greek Week
Special Events Captain. Along with a group of about 5 other members of the Penn
State Greek community, he is responsible for the competition side of Greek Week.
Greek Week, for those of you who don’t know, is the lead-up week to Blue & White
Weekend. It is a week of fun and bonding for the Greek community. It is a six-day
celebration of Greek Life at Penn State, which attracts much of the Greek community
to its events. Fraternities and sororities pair up to compete in series of basketball
tournaments, volleyball games, egg tosses and even a trivia bowl. Chariot races
weave their way through downtown State College and there is even a Mr. and Miss
Penn State Pageant.
The Special Events Committee is charged with facilitating
and organizing the competition events during the week. All of the planning and
ideas for a large portion of the events are given to the Special Events Captains.
The application and election process for this was quite fierce. Because of the
vast popularity of Greek Week among fraternities and sororities on campus, many
men and women apply for positions.
“I feel confident in crediting my time at PA Theta
for this development. I have applied for a Homecoming 2007 Captain position,
as well, and feel confident that these skills that the Phi Delt brotherhood has
taught me will make me a standout candidate in that election, as well,” Josh
claims.
"I am a founding member of a non-profit organization
called Spark the WAVE Youth Empowerment. Its a summer leadership camp for high school
students to teach them about leadership skills, group dynamics, etc. I volunteer
as a staff member each summer. Students must design and implement a community
service project in their town after the camp. I serve on the executive board
as the Community Service forum Cooridnator". |

Relations Standing Chairman for the Interfraternity
Council (IFC). The
position entails working with various student groups
on campus, in an effort to have a fair representation
of fraternities' interests. He hopes to develop close
ties with IFC head-honchos such as Penn State's
director of fraternity and sorority life, as he is
the gateway to the university and will provide recommendations
as to whom to meet with. Kyle will also be
highly involved with tthe Executive Vice President
and his PHC (Pan-Hellenic Council) counterpart
in order to serve as an integral member of tthe student
government through the UPUA (University Park Undergraduate

| Rob Leo ‘09 |
Semester: 4
Major: Kinesiology
Hometown: Levittown, PA
Position: House Manger
Outside Activities: “My decision
to become a cheerleader was unexpected to say the least. I
wouldn’t trade the experiences and values that
I have gained through cheerleading, as well as Phi
Delta Theta for anything. Through cheerleading, I
have traveled to places I never thought I would
have the chance to go to. These places include
Tampa, Clearwater and Minneapolis. I also plan on going
to Chicago in early March. Since Penn State takes
great pride in their cheerleading program, I have been
treated with the utmost respect from both Alumni and
the Penn State Community as a whole. The time
commitment a student-athlete undertakes is very harsh
and has made me a more responsible and well-rounded
person!” |

Semester: 4
Major: Biology
Hometown: Levittown, PA
Position: House Manager
Outside Activities: Todd is also a
Penn State cheerleader with his brother, Rob. “I

than how Rob explained our experiences with Penn State
Cheerleading! But, I am a better house
manager.” Todd jokes. |

| Dennis Thompson ‘09 |
Semester: 4
Major: Marketing
Hometown: Fairless Hills, PA
Position: T-Shirt Chairman
Outside Activities: Many opportunities
arose for Dennis this year at Penn State. These opportunities
were advantageous in furthering him in areas other
than education. One of these areas was PSMA. PSMA stands
for Penn State Marketing Association and Dennis thinks
of it as an “incredible place to network.” Although
he has only recently become an active member of PSMA,
he is attempting to increase his involvement in the
group.
“One of the things I like about PSMA is that it
is really versatile, and there are many opportunities to reach out in the different
areas of marketing. Recently, I worked the Penn State men’s basketball
game and met representatives from the newly formed Big Ten Network!” Dennis
exclaims.
While being involved in PSMA, Dennis saw many representatives
from major companies. They visit frequently and members get to work with them
and ask questions. Dennis has all ready met a representative from Dick’s.
Disney is visiting soon, and a representative from the Pittsburg Steelers should
be visiting soon after.
“I’m glad I joined, not only because of
the networking possibilities, but because of the people I get to meet along the
way. I also plan on running for a chair in homecoming which would also be a great
place to get my name out there.” Dennis concludes. |

|
| Eli Bohémond ‘09 |
Semester: 4
Major: Accounting
Hometown: Easton, PA
Position: Treasurer, Greek Relations
Chairman
Outside Activities: Eli is involved
in the Penn State Accounting Society, which opens the
doors for students to meet with all Big Four accounting
firms and multiple Fortune 500 companies. The club
teaches soon-to-be interns how to write a respectable
resume, how to dress and act during an interview, and
the proper etiquette while at an important business
lunch or dinner.
“Through the Accounting Society I have been able to network with companies
such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, KPMG and Ernst and Young. Networking is probably
the most beneficial aspect of being a member of the accounting society.” Eli
explains.
“In regards to the fraternity, it has helped me improve how I run the positions
I hold by utilizing skills such as being able to relate to people better as recruitment
chairman, implement the most efficient way to run finances for the treasury and,
most importantly, I learned how to be a proficient leader and learned how to
avoid unnecessary confrontation.” |

| Sean Mitchell ‘09 |
Semester: 4
Major: Political Science
Hometown: Levittown, PA
Outside Activities: Sean is a member
of Penn State’s Army ROTC. He enrolled himself
in ROTC during his first semester at Penn State; the
same semester he pledged Phi Delta Theta.
“While at times it is challenging, both activities
have become a memorable part of my college experience. Now that I am in my second
year at Penn State, my main responsibilities in ROTC are concerned with making
myself physically, mentally and tactically sound for LDAC, a camp I will
attend in Fort Lewis, Washington, during the summer following my junior year.” Mitchell
explains.
Following graduation Sean will be commissioned
as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Mitchell is currently on a four year
scholarship, which covers tuition expenses.
“My part of the obligation involves attending
physical and military training sessions as well as classes in military tactics
to supplement my normal academic courses, not to mention fraternity activities.
My ROTC experiences have been positive and hopefully will continue to benefit
me these next two years as well as after I graduate.” |

| Scott Rush ‘09 |
Semester: 4
Major: Kinesiology
Hometown: Fairless Hills, PA
Position: Recruitment Chairman
Outside Activity: At the beginning of
the 2007 Spring semester, Scott was given the opportunity
to work as a research assistant in the autonomic neurophysiology
lab here at Penn State. As a kinesiology major and with
plans to attend medical school, he knew that he couldn’t
let this opportunity pass him by.
“At first, I was a little nervous about working
in a lab with graduate students and doctors, but I knew this experience would
help me further develop my communication skills and give me hands on experience
working with patients and medical equipment,” Scott says.
The first couple of days working in the lab were a bit
intimidating for Rush, but after some training, he felt confident in his abilities.
“My main responsibility in the lab is to help
the researcher successfully complete the experiment. When working with a
patient, I am responsible for taking blood pressure, cardiac output, administering
doses of various medications, and the handling and testing of blood samples,” Rush
explains.
Although it’s a far reach from the duties of an
actual doctor, he believes this experience is another step in the right direction
and in the end will help him achieve his lifetime goal of becoming a sports medicine
physician.
He also helped train (strength & conditioning) the
men's volleyball and the women's soccer teams last year |

Hometown: Bloomsburg, PA
Position: Secretary |
|
|
|
| Adam Koontz ‘09 |
Semester: 4
Major: Engineering
Hometown: Lemoyne, PA
Outside Activities: This spring, Adam
is serving as an IFC social monitor. His duties entail:
visiting various fraternities’ registered social
events and making sure they follow all IFC social policies.
About one night a month, Adam must visit five or six
fraternities with another social monitor from a different
house. At that point, they go down a checklist, and
then move on to the next house.
“It’s actually a lot of fun getting to see
all the different houses, almost like rushing all over again.”
Homecoming OPP captain |

|
|
| Russell Chernick ‘09 |
Semester: 4
Major: Hotel and Restaurant Management
Hometown: Baldwin, NY
Outside Activities: Russell is currently
a Social Monitor for the IFC and PHC, which he “has
had some fun doing.” Chernick decided during
a chapter, late in December, that this position was
something that he wanted to do in order to put PA Theta's
name out there.
Duties of social monitors are too check certain fraternity
houses once per weekend and make sure that they are following certain guidelines
presented to all the houses by the IFC. The checklist requires that monitors
are making sure alcohol does not leave the fraternity house, and that everyone
there under 21 has a wristband on.
“It is actually very interesting, because I get
to see what other fraternities are doing right and wrong and how we can improve
our chapter. For example, when I was checking SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon),
I saw that they had a date auction, which seemed pretty fun and
we may do that at PA Theta.” Chernick says.
“So far, the position has been pretty entertaining
and I really like the position I currently hold. Maybe through
this I could get involved in higher positions in either IFC or Phi Delt. Lastly,
this job is a great experience and I think some of the brothers should think
about doing it in the future.” |

| Tim Pawloski ‘10 |
Semester: 2
Major: Film & Video
Hometown: Springfield, PA
Position: Historian
Outside Activities: Campus Bible Fellowship,
Penn State, Green Party, Lion Scouts, Sierra Club
Tim Pawloski is
one of about twenty Penn State students who form the
Campus Bible Fellowship. This is a nondenominational
Bible study which meets every Monday night in the Eisenhower
Chapel. “I decided I needed to get in touch with
my faith, and CBF really lets me de-stress from the
week,” Tim says.
Campus Bible Fellowship has been run for over a decade now. For years it has
provided a way for young Christians to get to know the scriptures and each other.
Led by Pastor Nick DiDomenico, the students of CBF focus on a particular book
of the bible over an extended period of time. This semester, Campus Bible Fellowship
is focusing on the book of Romans, “I had to laugh,” said Tim, “because
Romans 5:3 is all about enduring suffering because it builds character… and
that was the reading right before a very difficult time during pledging.”
Tim believes that his time in CBF is “in keeping with the Christian traditions
of Phi Delta Theta,” where he notes that of the Immortal Six, four went
into the ministry, and they were all very faithful men.
Tim continues to attend CBF meetings, but he is also working with Kevin Haslam ‘10
to start a weekly Phi Delt bible study in the house for interested brothers. |

| Jeff Dunning ‘10 |
Semester: 2
Major: Engineering
Hometown: Willow Street, PA
Outside Activities: “Historical
reenacting has been a hobby of mine for the last eight
years. I began reenacting in the time period of the
Civil War. For Civil War reenacting, I portray the
life and image of a common Union soldier in the Army
of the Potomac. I participate in large national reenactments,
like the annual event in Gettysburg, Pa in July, but
I also do smaller events. The unit that I reenact with
is the 1st PA Reserves, Company B.”
As of two years ago, Jeff began getting involved with
World War II. WWII reenacting is much smaller in scale and popularity than Civil
War reenacting, but he still believes it’s “a lot of fun.” During
events the participants go out to a field and simulate battles with authentic
equipment and guns. There are even original vehicles such as tanks, jeeps and
weapon carriers. For WWII reenacting Dunning reenacts with the 327th Glider Infantry
Regiment of the famed 101st Airborne Division. The unit he portrays was in every
major engagement of the European theater.
“One of the first questions is probably ‘why
do you do this?’ Well, the answer is simple. I love history, especially
military history, and immersing yourself in the life of someone who was there
is the best way to learn history. I also like to teach people about the time
period I am portraying and reenacting is a great way to teach the public. However,
for me personally, reenacting is a way of paying homage to the men who were part
of these great conflicts and making sure that their legacy lives on.” Dunning
reflects.
“Finally, I am a student of history and love to
hear stories about WWII so that I can improve on my impression and learn even
more. So if you have any stories about yourself in the war or your father or
anything of that nature and would like to share it with me, I would really enjoy
it. Also if you have any questions for me, please feel free to email me at jed5043@psu.edu.” |
